INTERNATIONAL EXERCISE TESTS ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSE ON THE ST LAWRENCE RIVER

ALEXANDRIA BAY, NY- Pollution response agencies along the both sides of the St. Lawrence River will be conducting a major exercise to test their ability to respond to an oil spill in the river. The Canadian/US Lakes Exercise (CANUSLAK) will focus on how a joint effort to respond to an oil spill will be managed. The exercise will be held from September 6-8, 2006 in and around Alexandria Bay, NY.

During the exercise,  residents may observe US and Canadian Coast Guard vessels, emergency management agencies, law enforcement units and pollution response personnel conducting drills and training in the area. These response assets will be conducting shoreline surveys, overflying the exercise area, setting up command posts and medical treatment facilities, towing oil spill containment boom and practicing evacuation plans.

Protecting the environment is one of the keystone missions of the US Coast Guard. This exercise brings together the agencies responsible for pollution response to ensure they are prepared for any incident that may threaten the health, safety and security of the St Lawrence River system.
