 COAST GUARD ICE BREAKING ACTIVITIES

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The United States Coast Guard will start breaking ice in the ports of Duluth, Minn. and Superior, Wis., beginning the week of March 12, 2007 in preparation for the 2007 Shipping season.  Ice breaking operations will extend to the Minnesota ports of Taconite Harbor, Silver Bay, Two Harbors, and ultimately the Canadian port of Thunder Bay.

On March 13, U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alder, later to be joined by U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay based out of St. Ignace Mich., will commence ice breaking operations in the waters of the St Louis Bay out to Lake Superior. This will include areas normally used by recreational users such as but not limited to St Louis Bay, Howard's Bay, Superior Bay, and the Entry Channels into Duluth Harbor and Superior Harbor.

Beginning the week of March 19, the two Coast Guard Cutters will move up along the Minnesota coastline breaking out the other U.S. commercial shipping ports until they arrive in Thunder Bay. In a joint U.S. and Canadian mission, the Coast Guard Cutters will be coordinating with Canadian agencies in assistance with breaking out the port of Thunder Bay.

All ice fishermen should remove any ice shacks. Snowmobile, All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) operators, and other recreational users of the ice should avoid shipping channels, plan their activity carefully, and use caution near the ice.

Further inquiries can be made by phone to Sault Vessel Traffic Service at (906) 635-3232 or via email at SOOTFC@USCG.MIL.
