CITGO PETROLEUM EMPLOYEES RECEIVE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMENDATION FROM U.S. COAST GUARD

Chicago, IL – The employees of the Citgo petroleum plant in Cicero, IL will receive a public service commendation on December 7th for their outstanding assistance to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The award will be presented to the employees of the Citgo petroleum plant by Captain Scott LaRochelle, the commander of USCG Sector Lake Michigan.

Citgo employees are being recognized for their outstanding support of the Coast Guard response to the explosion and sinking on the EMC423 tank barge.  On January 19, 2005, the EMC423 tank barge exploded and sank while transporting 540,000 gallons of clarified slurry oil on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.  Citgo generously allowed their waterfront facility to be used a critical staging point for massive pollution response, casualty investigation, and salvage operations that lasted for 120 days.  As a result of their voluntary and proactive assistance, environmental and economic damage to communities along this important waterway was greatly reduced.
